Volunteer
with Wilderness Kids

We appreciate your willingness to help us in our mission to get young people from under-resourced families in Alexandria out into nature. If you have a special skill you'd like to share during our after-school program or if you would like to join us on a weekend outing, please reach out to jerry@wildernesskidsalexandria.org with the subject line "Volunteer." Read more below about specific opportunities.

After-School Program

Wilderness Kids runs an after-school program every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with students from George Washington and Francis Hammond Middle Schools.  During the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions, we take students off-campus to a nearby park to explore nature, learn some camping skills or make observations of local plants and animals, and to build our team and our community. On Fridays, we do the same thing on campus at Francis Hammond, to the extent that the space enables such exploration.

We ask from volunteers a commitment of 1 day per week (Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday), from about 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and ask that volunteers commit for 6 weeks at a time. If that is interesting to you, please reach out to Jerry at

Jerry @ WildernessKidsAlexandria.org.

Thank you!

Weekend

Outings

Two or three times per month, Wilderness Kids students go on an extended outing on a Saturday or Sunday. Outings may be a hike, a paddle, a climb, or even a sail. We invite volunteers to join our students on the trail or river or rockface, to talk with them and get to know them, to share your love and/or knowledge of nature with them. We may ask you to drive students to/from the activity as well (so we seek primarily -- but not only-- volunteers with a car and a valid driver's license). You can find a list of our upcoming outings here and, as you scroll down that page, you'll come to past outings as well.  If you'd like to join us as a volunteer, please sign up on our Sign-Up Genius page or email Jerry at  Jerry@WildernessKidsAlexandria.org.

Thank you!
