with Wilderness Kids
We appreciate your willingness to help us in our mission to get young people from under-resourced families in Alexandria out into nature. If you have a special skill you'd like to share during our after-school program or if you would like to join us on a weekend outing, please reach out to email@example.com with the subject line "Volunteer." Read more below about specific opportunities.
Wilderness Kids runs an after-school program every Wednesday and Friday at Francis Hammond Middle School on Seminary Road in Alexandria. If you have a special skill that you'd like to share with our young people - nature knowledge, outdoor expertise, survival skills, yoga, mindfulness, and more - please let us know. The program is about 45 minutes long and sessions include anywhere from about 10 student to as many as 25. If you choose to volunteer, WKA staff will always be present to work with you and the students.
One or two times per month, Wilderness Kids students go on an extended outing on a Saturday or Sunday. Outings may be a hike, a paddle, a climb, or even a sail. We most often rely on volunteers to help transport students (so we seek primarily volunteers with a car and a valid driver's license) and we invite and encourage you to stay and join in the outing itself. Here is a tentative schedule of 2022 outings. 2022-23 schedule is due out soon!
Saturday February 19: Picnic in Dora Kelley Nature Preserve, followed by climbing at Movement Gym, Crystal City. We especially are seeking volunteers who are, or can become, belay certified at Movement.
Saturday March 19: Hiking at Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge. Approximately 9:30 to 3 p.m.
Saturday April 2: Hiking at Turkey Run to see the bluebells!
Saturday April 23: Climbing at Carderock, with the American Alpine Club, Potomac Appalachian Trail, Club and ¡Escala DC!
Sunday May 8: Paddling on Lake Royal. (Note: boat numbers are limited so we likely will not have volunteers this day)
Saturday May 21: Boating on the Potomac with Chesapeake Bay Foundation
Monday June 13: Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay with CRAB Sailing
