On the third annual Wilderness Kids Girls Trip, 8 of our students ventured out to Rocky Gap State Park. The park features 243-acre Lake Habeeb, making it the perfect place for a group of girls that love spending time in the water. From kayaking to swimming and beach volleyball, the girls made the most of their proximity to the gorgeous lake.
The group also journeyed through the Allegheny Mountains on a scenic train ride. The Frostburg Flyer — the legendary steam locomotive No. 1309 — travels from Cumberland, MD, to Frostburg, MD, immersing passengers in breathtaking mountain views.
Left to Right: Ja’mea, Eimy, Adriana, and Sahar enjoy being one with the water; Sandra and Dara show off their volleyball skills playing with locals; The girls pose in front of the legendary steam locomotive No. 1309 at the end of the journey; Eimy and Kalissa get a full view of the train and the beautiful scenery.
Nights at the campground were illuminated, not only by the stunningly bright full moon, but by glow sticks and a sparkling disco ball. After a day of being inspired by stunning views, the girls used their creative powers to bring more beauty into the night.
Left: Sahar lights up the night with her impressively long glow-necklace. Right: Our Program Coordinator Mel and Educator Natalie showcase some of the glow-stick creations as the girls are hard at work making glow-stick art in the background.
As we wrapped up the 3-day trip on August 10th, it became clear that connection and a sense of belonging were the main themes of the experience. The girls bonded, not just with each other but with staff and even locals playing volleyball on the beach. Most importantly, they lifted each other up (Sometimes literally! See photo below.). Thanks to the girls who joined us this year for making this trip a great experience!
