As the school year comes to an end and we kick off our 2026 Summer Experiences, Wilderness Kids concludes the 2025-2026 After School Program. This spring’s after-school sessions with middle schoolers fostered friendship, sparked curiosity, encouraged adventure, and created opportunities for self-expression.

Jefferson-Houston students participating in LINK Club, in partnership with ARHA, embodied self-expression throughout their time with us, but were especially creative while water coloring at Green Spring Gardens and exploring the amphitheater at Mason District Park. Green Spring Gardens provided plenty of inspiration and the amphitheater became the stage where a group of girls showcased their step skills. It was an honor to witness students being in their element while on outings with us.

Patrick Henry students and their dedicated science teacher, Ms. Starling, were wonderfully curious about the natural environments that we explored together. Whether inspecting bugs or spotting birds through binoculars, Ms. Starling and the students embraced every opportunity to connect with nature. Huntley Meadows Park was a treasure trove for this group and quickly became a favorite spot.

Francis C. Hammond students embraced the spirit of friendship and adventure throughout their experience. They took ownership of their time together, leaning into spontaneity and stepping into each new challenge with enthusiasm. Most memorably, the group made an executive decision to explore Founders Park and the rest of Old Town Alexandria. Along the way, friendships naturally deepened and new connections formed, shaping a strong sense of community across every activity.

Francis C. Hammond students enjoy their spontaneous trip to Old Town Alexandria, including ice cream, and show their deep connections at Dora Kelly Nature Park.

We look back fondly on the Spring 2026 after-school sessions and look ahead to new adventures in the school year to come.
