Our Mission

Wilderness Kids Alexandria provides life-enriching experiences in nature to teenagers from under-resourced families in Alexandria, Virginia.

Our Values

Seven values underlie and inform the work we do. Here them described in this video and see a sample of our work in action!

Nature is Home: We get students into nature as often as possible.

Equity in our Community: We build a community where each member has ownership and responsibility.

Curiosity: We ask questions and share ideas.

Quality: We cultivate new skills and attention to detail.

Mindfulness: We take time to be quiet and to slow down.

Gratitude: We express thanks and notice how doing so may change our perspective.

Creative Expression: We sketch, paint, make music, write poetry, and more.

What We Do

AFter
School

Wilderness Kids Alexandria runs an after-school outdoor education program with students at Francis Hammond Middle School. We may be able to work with your group weekdays after school as well. Just ask!

Weekends

About twice per month, we run half-day or day-long outings to some of the DMV's most beautiful and iconic outdoor spaces. We've been hiking on the Billy Goat Trail and in Prince William Forest, sailing on the Chesapeake, climbing at Carderock, and more.

Summertime

In summer we lead three 3 day, 5 day, and 7 day camping trips in and around Shenandoah National Park. Our students have paddled the Shenandoah, climbed at Raven's Roost, backpacked at the Big Schloss, and slipped, splashed and swam in White Oak Canyon.

You can help.

If you or your organzation works with teenagers from under-resourced families (6th to 12th grade), please reach out to discuss a partnership.
